About

My name is Calliana Leff, and I'm a Junior at Boston University taking Monsters, Hauntings and Horror in Latinx Literature & Film. I'm an English major, so I love to read, and I have yet to take an English class that focuses on horror and speculative fiction. My sister and I l also love to watch horror movies together, so I'm looking forward to understanding more about the genre and the many meanings behind the media I consume. I also look forward to finding new horror stories created by Latinx authors, as well as understanding the cultural importance of monsters and horror across various times and spaces.

As I begin this blog, I am really interested in focusing on the way that certain phenomenons and identities are symbolized—for better or for worse—through the physical body of the monster. I'm specifically really interested in the way that political fears about sex, money, and migration are reflected through the monster's physicality and the identities that can be ostracized as a result. Generally, I hope to sift through the nuances of the traits of each monster we study, and connect those traits to the cultural and political context of the time to better understand why each monster, specifically, holds power.
